Shamonique Harris: A Story of Leadership, Community, and Success at Long Beach City College
For many international students, leaving home to pursue an education in a new country is a leap of faith—one filled with excitement, challenges, and endless possibilities. For Shamonique Harris, a student from Jamaica, Long Beach City College (LBCC) became more than just a college; it became her home, her community, and the foundation for her growth as a leader.
A Leap of Faith
When Shamonique arrived in the United States, she was filled with uncertainty. She had left behind her family, her culture, and everything familiar to chase an education that could change her future. Like many international students, she wondered if she would find a place where she truly belonged.
LBCC quickly became that place. From the moment she set foot on campus, she was welcomed by faculty, staff, and fellow students who encouraged her to explore, engage, and step into leadership roles she never imagined for herself.
Becoming a Campus Leader
It didn’t take long for Shamonique to make her mark. What started as a simple effort to get involved turned into a journey of leadership and advocacy. She took on multiple leadership positions, each one shaping her into the confident and inspiring student she is today:
International Student Program (ISP) President – Supporting fellow international students and ensuring they feel at home.
President Ambassador – Representing LBCC and sharing her experience with new and prospective students.
Associated Student Body President – Giving a voice to students and working on initiatives to improve campus life.
Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society – Recognizing academic excellence and fostering student achievement.
Vice President of the Social Work Club – Bringing awareness to social issues and connecting students with meaningful causes.
Active Member of the International Student Club – Promoting cultural exchange and strengthening the international student experience.
Each of these roles allowed Shamonique to not only grow as a leader but also uplift those around her. She made sure that no student—especially international students—felt alone in their journey.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Support
Adjusting to life in a new country wasn’t always easy. There were moments of doubt, financial struggles, and cultural adjustments. But LBCC provided the resources that helped her thrive:
Scholarships: In Spring 2023, Shamonique was one of only three students to receive a scholarship from the International Students Department. This financial support helped ease the burden of tuition and textbooks.
Campus Resources: From tutoring services to leadership workshops, she took advantage of everything LBCC had to offer.
The Viking Vault: A food pantry that provided daily meals, ensuring no student had to worry about their next meal.
On-Campus Job Opportunities: Allowing her to gain work experience while managing her studies.
With this support, Shamonique not only survived—she thrived.
Building a Community of Connection
More than anything, what Shamonique cherishes the most is the sense of community she has built at LBCC. She has met students from all over the world, exchanged stories, and learned from cultures beyond her own.
Her advice to incoming international students? "Don’t be afraid to get involved. Reach out to your community, your professors, and your peers. The more you connect, the more you grow."
A Favorite Spot on Campus
Amidst her busy schedule, Shamonique finds peace at LBCC’s Trade Campus (TTC). Nestled away from the hustle and bustle, TTC is where she unwinds, shares meals with friends, and reflects on how far she has come.
A Future of Possibilities
As graduation approaches, Shamonique is preparing for her next big step. With the support of LBCC and her membership in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK), she is exploring opportunities for a full-ride scholarship to continue her education.
Her dream? To pursue a career in social work—helping others find the same guidance, support, and opportunities that shaped her journey at LBCC.
Why LBCC Stands Out
Shamonique’s story is a testament to what’s possible when a college provides not just education, but a community. LBCC isn’t just a place to take classes—it’s a place where students find mentorship, leadership opportunities, and a family away from home.
